I love hosting the YASA club here in Provo!
Yesterday the girls agreed to enlarge the group size from 9 to 12, and added a silly saying moment were girls will take turns sharing a joke, funny story, riddle, etc.

February: Madalyn
March: Bethany
April: Natalie
May: Eliza

We held class elections. Positions were filled for this term which will cover February-May.

President is Janetta.
Vice president  is Natalie.
Secretary is Eliza.

The girls did a wonderful job planning the service and activity projects for the next four months.

February: Serve at D.I. or B.S.H.. Tour the Post Office as the activity and discuss Strike at Shanes.
March: Walk to the duck pond and pick up garbage along the way as our service project.
Make Jaegi birds from Korea as our activity and discuss the book Small Steps: The Year I Got Polio
April: Tour a veterinarian center as the activity and serve by grooming someones animals. Discuss the book She Touched the World: Laura Bridgeman, deaf-blind Pioneer.
May: Return to Br. Hinckley's farm for horse care and riding and have a Pizza Party. Make your dough and bake them on the brick oven outside! Discuss the book Five Little Peppers and How They Grew.

Today the girls served by stuffing cloth balls for children. Next on the list is to stitch the opening shut and locate organizations that would like to have them to give to little children.

After taking care of all the business stuff...

We stopped at a local park for a few mintes of fresh air and then we hurried over the Br. Hinckley's home were he shared his love for his animals with us. The Hinckley family have 4 Fallow deer that are an Argientina breed, and a kind and gentle 28 year old horse called Diamond. The girls brought carrots to feed the both the deer and horse and grain was also provided for the girls to feed to the animals. They also got to curry Diamond and played with the family dog. Before we knew it it was time to get the girls back to the house, write thanks you notes and go home.

November's Meeting

Yesterday we meet for our monthly activity and book discussion of Mary Jemison, Indian Captive. Our activity was a fun introduction to the art of tooling and whip stitching leather coin purses together. After talking and drawing pictures that represented something from the book, we racked leaves for Grandma Allen. Before I and the girls knew it, our three hours were over.

I would like to get together in December to elect our new semester's club presidency and activities for January through April. I would like to do some Christmas crafts too and perhaps make a gift for each family.

Oct 28th's meeting...

was a Great Big Success! Thanks girls for making it such. The Provo cemetery service project was fun. We racked leaves for about 40 minutes.

Held our book discussion about Abigail Adams; talked about nick names, illnesses, responsibility, and character development.

Craft time was fun I thought. We made three different items, painting of pumpkins, fall center pieces, and lollipop ghost.

We will meet the third Friday of November that is the 18th from 1pm-4pm.
Please read the assigned book about Mary Jemison, Please bring back all quilts you might have brought home to work on, our goal is to finish tying these quilts and return them to the Humanitarian Center and our activity will involve leather, beads, and sewing.

September's meeting...

This fall we have 10 girls participating in YASA. Nine were able to attend this month. We held class elections. Julianne is president, Tatiana is vice-president, and Madalyn is secretary.

The hospitality committee, the service project committee, and the activities committee planned the next two months. I has a little nervous because my co-adviser had a sick child so I was alone. I was afraid we would have to much time but these girls did a fantastic job planning their activities. I am looking forward to serving at the cemetery and carving pumpkins, crafts, leaf rubbings, and a book discussion on the childhood of Abigail Adams.

In November, the girls will hold a discussion about Mary Jemison an Indian Captive. We will do leather work and autumn center pieces for our activity and finish making blankets for the humanitarian center as our service project.

Bethany is providing the snacks in October and Julianne will provide in November.

After our plans were made, I took the girls to the west side of town and they spent 75 minutes leaving fliers for the Primary Children's Hospital Fund, Pennies by the Inch. the girls moved so quickly and having nine girls running they did a great job. I bought each an ice cream and we spent about 10 minutes at the park and then made it back home so that I and my family could go camping.

The three hours with the girls was so fun, I felt that all my sleep deprivation was washed away being around the enthusiasm of these lovely young woman.

I am bothered about one thing. It's the club name, Young American Stateswoman Association. Maybe I'm not seeing things correctly with the club concept. We don't do anything related to statesmanship, unless it's the fact that we talk about woman from history and do a service project.  But this doesn't seem quite right. I'd like to do a field trip related to good government in the beginning of the next year.

I need other ideas to see the bigger picture for this association and what I want to have happen for these good girls.

Change in plans...

We will discuss our first book in October. Please see the side bar with the order of the books we will be reading.

With the start of a new semester, it is always busy getting the elections and activities planned for humanitarian projects and  the girls personal fun projects. Plus, this month, we will be taking the fliers for the Pennies By The Inch program to doors in the neighborhood so I thought it best to start our colloquium in October.

See you this Friday the 23rd at 1pm

test

Trying to get a post at this site to go to Facebook.

July's Meeting

Today we first held a book discussion about Elizabeth Blackwell, the first female doctor in America. Then we went to the Provo Pioneer Museum and viewed a number of interesting items and facts about our pioneer heritage. We also talked about the 1828 definition of what a pioneer means and how each of us girls can be pioneers. Four girls were present today. Vice President Julianne Z. welcomed the girls to our club meeting. Our service project was a continuation of tying quilts for the humanitarian center. Two quilts were taken home by Julianne and Eliza. They hope to have them tied by the September meeting.

Here are just a couple pictures. We thought we took more but not so.

June's Meeting

Eleven girls attend this months meeting. We had a great time during our water activities at the older Mrs. Allen's yard. We played with water balloons and had a great soapy slip and slide. For our service activity we went to the Provo Library and dusted the tables. shelves and tops of the book stands. Oops, we forgot to take pictures of the water activities. Sorry...

Miss. Frisby and the Rats of Nimh

Miss. Frisby and the Rats of Nimh
I going to talk about Miss. Frisby and the Rats of Nimh. This is probably one of my favorite book. I going to talk about two reasons I like this book. The first one I like the rats’  story because it has adventure in it and it has a lot of the rats story .  My favorite part of the story is when they get to smart and escape . My other favorite part is when they move Miss. Frisby ‘s house the reason I like that part timothy is find and every one is happy

Our Second Meeting is June 17th...

Our next meeting is June 17th, the third Friday at 1pm to 4pm. We will discuss Molly Pitcher, serve at the Provo Library for about 40 minutes and return for playing water games outside. I hope it will be warm!

PLEASE BRING:

 1. A Towel, Change of clothes or Wear a swim suit, Sun screen, if you need it.
                               2.   Bring your book on Molly Pitcher. I hope you are reading it!

3. Please bring your release forms back! Signed by your parents. This is most important as we will be traveling to the library.

`Our First Meeting...a true success

Here the girls are painting rocks for the YASA garden. Sadly it was raining so the rocks stayed indoors until sunny days returned. We now need a picture of the rocks lining the garden. Very cute.
Congrats to all the girls who ran for election.  Tatiana is President for this quarter, over Hospitality. Julianne is Vice President over Service Projects, and Victoria was elected Secretary over Activities Projects. It was neat to watch the girls stand and say why they thought they would be the right person for the job. Not to worry, everyone will have a chance to lead as the year progresses.

Here's the girls planting a large variety of sunflower seeds and two packages of wild flowers. This garden is going to look grand and smell lovely.

Bethany and Mattia

I'm Mattia. I'm 10. I like to cook and do art. I hope to teach an art class this summer to little children in our neighborhood. I sell bread with my brother and sister. Sometimes it is fun but mostly it is work. My parents say we had to work six days and on the Sabbath we can rest.
And I'm Bethany. I turned 12 this week and went to the temple with my mom yesterday. I'm learning Latin and hope to be a veterinarian and provide animals with a safe haven.

Date Changes

I may be at girls camp in July.  We will therefore meet July 29th. It will be hot. Shall we meet in the am?

May 20th:  Can we meet from 9am-Noon instead of 1-4pm? (If the date is changed to the 27th, I will still need to meet in the am.)

June is still on for 17th.

If we meet in the am's we can have a picnic at noon. Not sure that will work for all who are involved.

Registration is now open...

Please take the time to fill out the registration document in order to join the Provo YASA club.

I hope to keep the quarterly dues at $30. That is $10/month. This amount includes the purchase of the assigned book for discussion.  If you already have the book, the monthly dues will be minus the cost of the book (provided you tell me in advance).  My concern is that your daughter will have the books with enough time to read before the next meeting. Dues will need to be paid at the first meeting on May 20th.

Dues Schedule:
May-July: $25
September-November: $30
January-March: TBA
April-June: TBA

If for any reason the economy is taking a toll on your family, please contact me. I'm sure something can be worked out through a bartering system so that your daughter can enjoy participation in this club. I can be reached at 801-850-6554.

Our first meeting on May 20th will include committee meetings to decide future activities, service projects, answering questions, hospitality assignments, election of president, vice president, secretary, and creating bylaws (or at lest trying to create if time permits).

May 20th's activity will be to plant a YASA friendship garden. We will do this next to our meeting room so that the girls can watch  the development each month. The girls will paint rocks for the border.
May 20th's book discussion will include the girls sharing a female character or real person that exemplifies faith, courage, determination, virtue,...that your daughter has appreciation for. I will hand out the book for June at this meeting. I think I want to talk to the co-advisers and determine the books otherwise I think we will spend to much time deciding with the girls. The girls are going to focus on the activities and service projects.
May 20th's service project is not known yet. Maybe my mother in-law can share about her mission to the humanitarian department and she might have a small project we can work on. More info to come...

I believe I have two co-advisers now. Jessica Lewis and Carolyn Smith.

Once you register, I will send an invite to you and your daughter to blog at this blogsite. I would like you (parent) to help your daughter share about herself and include a picture if that is o.k. Once the club starts, I will make the blog private to include only the emails that are submitted to me.

I think this is a good start. I hope the registration form works for you. It was fine for me.

I will open registration to other families in about two weeks. I wanted to give those who contacted me first  the opportunity to continue. We will limit the size to 15.  Ages 10 through 13.

A sudden idea that just might work...

This afternoon while I was waiting for Mattia at her Take Flight class, a sudden idea, an epiphany, a saygobedo came into my mind.

I was thinking about the YASA club I'm starting for my girls and others girls in the valley. We meet on the 20th of next month, and I was wondering about what our first activity will be if I don't get the committee members together prior to our first club meeting. I was also thinking about gardening and mini-factories that I just read about in Oliver DeMille's book The Coming Aristocracy, when my mind was enlightened....

We can do a YASA garden right next to the entrance to our basement level! The earth is ready for planting and it feels like the right way to start our club together. The girls can bring sprouting plants or we can do seeds of both veggies and flowers.

Peace has come to my mind about that aspect.  We will need a service project too.

YASA of Provo Starts May 20th

Welcome to the Provo Chapter of YASA!

I'm Nickie, your Adviser.
The picture you see here is of me with my husband Gove.
We will be married 16 years on May 13th. We have three children.
You will meet our daughters Bethany and Mattia while attending YASA of Provo.

I hope you girls, and even your moms will post experiences with YASA and help keep each other motivated to learn.

I have one goal in mind for everyone who attends YASA of Provo.

I hope that each of you will come to know that you have a capacity for learning that has
NO LIMIT.
Learning grows as your confidence grows. Learning and confidence are friends and are always near each another.
Your confidence is going to grow while you attend YASA.
Your learning will soar as long as you put two little words to work...
JUST TRY
If you will just try, your confidence and your ability for learning will be so exciting you'll be jumping for joy and running around excited to share with others what your doing.
This is going to be FUN.
